Monaco is located in Western Europe, along the Mediterranean Sea, and borders the south coast of France. It is the second smallest independent nation in the world, and has been compared in size to being three times the size of The Mall in Washington, D.C.. It has a total land area of only about 1.9 square kilometers. In fact, the small amount of land that was available in this country was not enough for the number of people living there so land had to be reclaimed from the sea. Monaco has a total coastline length of 4.4 kilometers.

Monaco has a very rugged, hilly, and rocky terrain, and because of this it has 0% arable land. It also has no forested areas. Monaco lies very close to the base of Mount Agel, which has an elvation of about 140 m and is the highest point of land in Monaco's area. This country is nearly 100% urban, and fairly crowded for its small land size.
